Southern League Preview: Thatcham Town vs Basingstoke Town
The Kingfishers welcome Basingstoke Town to the Stacatruc Stadium in the Southern League on Saturday after a lengthy spell of postponements (3:00PM)
Danny Robinson’s squad have seen their last two matches called off due to poor weather conditions but the Blues are back in action this weekend with hopes of closing the gap between themselves and league frontrunners Frome.
Thatcham have endured a dip in form after going without a win in their last five fixtures, losing their last three. Defeats have seen the Blues slip to second in the division, five points behind the league leaders. Robinson’s side do hold an advantage with two games in hand over their close league rival so a win this weekend could be crucial in the title race.
Basingstoke have faced a difficult campaign and sit 19th in the table; just two points above Barnstaple at the foot of the standings after recording 16 defeats so far this term.
Their most recent 3-1 defeat to Melksham added to their troubles as the Hampshire-based side have now conceded 67 times this season.
Thatcham will intend to capitalise on Basingstoke’s leaky defence but will be without top scorer Kyle Tooze as the striker sits out the first of his four-game suspension.
The Kingfishers have added highly-rated forward John Mills their attacking options and the striker, who scored 79 goals for Didcot over the course of two seasons, is set to make his debut on Saturday.
