Thatcham Town v Helston Athletic

Thatcham Town v Helston Athletic

Andy Morris29 Mar - 09:02

This afternoon the Kingfishers entertain Helston Athletic at the Mettal Stadium, kick-off is at 3pm at the Mettal Stadium

Helston occupy the fourth and final relegation place but are 8 points better off than the Kingfishers having played an extra game.

The reverse fixture at Kellaway Park in December was another which Thatcham will look back on as two points dropped. While leading 2-1, it strongly looked as though the Kingfishers should have been awarded a penalty, and then Jamie Davies received an extremely harsh second yellow card. The hosts equalised in the closing stages to make it 2-2 before receiving a puzzling red card of their own.

Athletic have dropped into the relegation places following an alarming drop in form, having picked up three points from draws in their last twelve outings. Last Saturday Liam Eddy’s equaliser earned them a 1-1 draw at home to Larkhall, while the previous weekend Oliver Redd struck deep into injury time to make it 2-2 at Bashley. Their last win came at the end of January when Redd and Jack Crago both scored in injury time as they defeated Cribbs 2-1.

Helston have shipped a lot of goals lately, conceding 9 at Bishops Cleeve last month, then 8 at home to the bottom club Cinderford earlier in a packed March schedule.

In their first season at this level, the Blues have experienced some success in their Cornish derbies, firstly defeating Mousehole 4-2 and then Falmouth Town 2-1 in front of an impressive crowd of 623.

Thatcham’s win over Cinderford in midweek was the club’s first win in ten games, though looking at it more positively, it’s only one defeat in five. Harvey Flippance is a doubt following last weekend's injury, but Tinashe Gwavava remains unavailable.

As usual a printed programme will be on sale for just £2 at the turnstile or in the bar beforehand.
